Porcelain Dental Veneers
What are Porcelain Veneers?
One of the longest-lasting and most effective cosmetic dentistry options is the porcelain dental veneer. With a porcelain veneer, you can improve the appearance of common imperfections in the teeth, such as gaps, chips, stains, discolorations, and even some cases of misalignment. These ultra-thin porcelain shells are designed to fit your own unique tooth structure and blend in with surrounding teeth. They are designed to be comfortable and can last for decades – not to mention the fact that porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable to others. They look so much like natural teeth, it’s likely that people will notice only your beautiful smile and not even realize you’ve had dental work!
Our cosmetic dentist, Yasaman Roland, DDS, completed post-graduate dental training at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), one of the most respected dental institutions in the world. She recently earned LVI Fellowship status by completing the LVI CORE Curriculum and comprehensive written exam. This advanced training has helped Dr. Roland become even more skilled with cosmetic dentistry procedures, allowing her to extend superior care to her patients with the goal of achieving beautiful results during a comfortable treatment experience.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
Made of a strong ceramic and custom-designed for your teeth, porcelain dental veneers are durable, thin shells that are cemented onto the visible portion of your tooth. These effective dental treatments offer a number of aesthetic benefits, including:
- Improvement in the appearance of stains and discoloration caused by tobacco use, coffee and/or wine drinking, and the natural process of aging
- Correction of chips, gaps, fractures, or misalignments
- Replacement of worn tooth enamel
Porcelain dental veneers can address a variety of dental issues with results that last for years. In fact, they are some of the most popular cosmetic dental options available!
The Porcelain Veneers Process
During the porcelain dental veneers procedure, Dr. Roland may need to remove a small amount of the tooth being treated in order to provide an accurate fit for the veneer. Once this has been accomplished, an impression of your teeth will be made here at our practice and then sent to an outside lab to create a custom-molded porcelain veneer. On your second visit, Dr. Roland will attach the veneer to the tooth with a strong cement and color-match the veneer so that it blends in well with surrounding teeth. And that’s it! Two office visits for results that can last decades. With porcelain dental veneers, you can improve an array of cosmetic dental issues and feel great about your smile.
How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?
One of the many benefits of porcelain veneers is that the relatively simple treatment process can yield a long-term cosmetic solution. Porcelain is incredibly enduring and requires no additional maintenance besides daily brushing and flossing. With good oral hygiene habits and proper care, porcelain veneers can last years—even decades, if the veneer is not exposed to excessive grinding or clenching.
If you are prone to grinding your teeth during sleep or unconsciously throughout the day, it may be a sign that your temporomandibular (TMJ) joints are misaligned. These joints are closely related to proper function of the head, neck, and shoulder muscles, often causing symptoms such as teeth grinding as well as facial pain, migraines, and loose teeth, among others. Dr. Roland treats the underlying causes of teeth grinding by realigning the physiological mechanisms that may be preventing a comfortable and well-aligned bite. Please contact our practice for more information on TMJ treatment to prevent excessive wear on your veneers and restore your oral wellness.
Porcelain Veneers Vs. Dental Crowns
There are a number of ways to cosmetically and functionally improve your teeth and smile. While both veneers and dental crowns can be composed of durable and natural-looking porcelain material, each treatment has its own respective purposes and benefits. Porcelain veneers are considered cosmetic solutions to mask minor dental imperfections, such as chips, cracks, gaps, and misalignments. They are designed to partially cover the tooth structure and can be highly effective in providing the look of a full, healthy tooth for an enhanced smile appearance. Because porcelain veneers are designed to be sturdy and long-lasting, they also offer secondary benefits in strengthening the tooth and improving biting function. However, they are not considered to be a restorative solution for weak or unhealthy teeth.
In contrast, dental crowns are principally utilized for the restoration of decayed, damaged, badly cracked, or weakened teeth. They can be an exceptional way to save a tooth from extraction, provide a greater degree of structural support, or improve biting function. Dental crowns are generally used to cap an unhealthy tooth or dental implant, covering the whole tooth for comprehensive protection. Although they can be tooth-colored and extremely natural-looking for adjunctive cosmetic benefits, the primary purpose of dental crowns is to restore the tooth structure.
Dr. Roland can assess your unique dental needs to determine the most ideal option for your treatment goals. If your concerns are primarily aesthetic, porcelain veneers generally offer a more beneficial enhancement option; however, dental issues characterized by tooth damage or impaired biting function are usually better addressed with dental crown treatment or another restorative solution.
How Much Do Porcelain Veneers Cost?
As an investment in your smile and oral health that can provide long-term results, the porcelain veneers price will generally depend on the unique factors of your treatment plan, including:
- The type of veneers used
- The number of veneers placed
- The location of the veneers
